First Dude Preview
Relative unknown First Dude will challenge the field at the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Can he pull off the upset?
Trainer Dale Romans has waited a long time to unveil First Dude’s talents. The colt was excluded from the Kentucky Derby because of earnings, but Romans is expecting a big breakthrough race from his horse sooner rather than later. Romans even went as far as to say that First Dude is a “special horse” and is excited that the colt will have the opportunity to show what he can do on Saturday.
When the opening odds were released earlier in the week, First Dude was 15/1 to win the 2010 Preakness Stakes. But his odds have since dropped to 20/1 according to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, possibly due to a poor post position draw.
Speaking of which, First Dude drew the No. 11 post on Wednesday, which means he’s the second horse from the farthest outside position. Most trainers don’t like their horses running from that far out in this race because of a sharp first turn, although Romans doesn’t seemed overly concerned about the post.
Final Analysis & Outlook:
Consider this: First Dude took fifth at the G1 Florida Derby on March 20, which was his first graded stakes. In his second graded stakes outing, which was also his latest race, he finished third at the Blue Grass on April 10. That’s a sharp prep and it was also his fourth race of the year. Granted, he doesn’t have a stakes win in his career, is coming off a five-week layoff, races close to the pace and has a best Beyer of 90, but we think First Dude could surprise. If nothing else, he offers a lot of value at 20/1 and think he might be a sleeper to finish in the money on Saturday.
