Can Dublin overcome a poor post position in order to claim victory at the 2010 Preakness Stakes on Saturday?
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas was not happy on Wednesday when the post positions were drawn and Dublin go the No. 12 post. Lukas cited the fact that the horses fan out at the start and now he has to make the decision about whether or not to get down around the first turn. Given that his other horse in Saturday’s race, Northern Giant, has the No. 4 post, Lukas would love to switch his two horses seeing as how Dublin is the more skilled of the two. That said, Lukas knows that complaining about the post positions will get him nowhere.
When the odds opened earlier in the week, Dublin had mid-range odds at 10/1 and that’s where they currently sit now according to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com. Contenders with similar odds are Caracortado at 10/1 and Jackson Bend at 11/1.
As previously mentioned, Dublin will start at the No. 12 post, which is the far outside position. Considering none of the three inside positions have won in the last 12 years, it’s a good thing that Dublin is on the outside but coming from the No. 12 post could present a challenge at the start of the race.
Final Analysis & Outlook:
Dublin finished seventh at the Kentucky Derby but despite the poor performance, having a prep less than two weeks out is often desired when it comes to betting on the Preakness. He’s a versatile colt in that he can stalk the pace or rally, but the problem is that he’s coming off a poor prep effort and doesn’t have a stakes win this year. He also hasn’t run a 100 Beyer and even his own trainer is concerned about his post position. We wouldn’t be surprised if Dublin finished in the money, but when you stack him up against Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky, he fails in comparison. In other words, we don’t see a victory for Dublin on Saturday.
