After winning his first race of the year, Caracortado hasn’t tasted victory in his last two outings. Can he surprise the field and pull off an upset at the Preakness?
Trainer Michael Machowsky has come under some criticism recently for sticking with jockey Paul Atkinson despite the fact that this will be the rider’s first Preakness and Triple Crown race of his career. But Machowsky believes in loyalty and after Atkinson collected victories in the first five starts of his career, he has all the backing he needs. Atkinson has collected victories on Caracortado in two of their last four outings together, but they have their work cut out for them on Saturday.
Caracortado opened as an 18/1 long shot win the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes, but his odds have improved to 10/1 according to oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. Contenders with similar odds include Dublin at 10/1 and Jackson Bend at 11/1.
Part of the reason that Caracortado’s odds improved to 10/1 was because of his solid post position. He’ll start at the No. 9 position, which is a good thing considering that the winning posts have all come from the outside in the last 12 years. The No. 9 post has picked up at least one victory in the last 12 years.
Final Analysis & Outlook:
Here’s the good: Caracortado can stalk the pace (a plus at the Preakness), has G2 and G3 victories this year and has three starts under his belt. Here’s the bad: He’s also coming off a six week layoff and a poor prep after finishing fourth at the G1 Santa Anita Derby on April 3. His jockey has also never raced in the Preakness, although the No. 9 post position was a great draw on Wednesday. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Caracortado finish in the money on Saturday, although we’re not sure he has what it takes to win.
