Strong Mandate Preakness Stakes
(Updated: Strong Mandate will not run this weekend at the Preakness Stakes)
BALTIMORE, MD (The Spread) – One of the long shots entering the field this Saturday for the 2014 Preakness Stakes is Strong Mandate, who didn’t compete in the Kentucky Derby.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Strong Mandate is currently 20/1 to win the Preakness, which give him the same odds as Ring Weekend and General A Rod. California Chrome remains the favorite at 5/8, while Social Inclusion is 5/1 and Danza is 7/1.
One reason why Strong Mandate is a long shot to win this weekend’s Preakness is due to the fact that he struggled so much in his last start. After finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and placing second at the Southwest Stakes, he finished fourth in the Rebel Stakes and then wasn’t close to placing in the Arkansas Derby.
Running the longest race of his career, Strong Mandate finished eighth in the Arkansas Derby behind Danza, Ride On Curlin and Bayern (among others), who will all compete in this year’s Preakness. Strong Mandate simply hasn’t proven that he can compete on a long-distance track, which is exactly what is needed to win a Triple Crown event.
That said, he does have some victories under his belt. He won a MSW on August 17 of last year and also placed first in the Grade I Hopeful on September 2. But those starts were only 6 ½ furlongs and 7 furlongs, respectively, so again, he could struggle come Saturday.
The 2014 Preakness Stakes will take place this Saturday, May 17 at 6:20PM ET (post time).
