Race History

One got the sense that Super Saver was destined for big things heading into the Derby. He had already finished third at the G3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 13 and then second at the G1 Arkansas Derby before winning at Churchill Downs on May 1. He had been improving throughout the entire year and peaked at the right time.

Opening Odds

Super Saver opened as a 2/1 favorite to win the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes, according to oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. The contenders with the next best odds are Paddy O’prado at 3/1 and Lookin at Lucky at 4/1.

Early Analysis

Perhaps what is most remarkable about Super Saver’s win at the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago was the fact that Borel made only one move to claim victory. He got to the rail (his trademark), made one move around a contender and sprinted Super Saver to victory. He knows how to win at Churchill Downs and considering he rode Rachel Alexandra to victory at the 2009 Preakness, he knows how to win at Pimlico as well. Super Saver ran a 104 Beyer at the Kentucky Derby, already has three starts this year, has a stakes win and is coming off a sharp prep inside 30 days. There’s a reason why Borel and Super Saver are the favorites and they have a huge advantage over the field after winning the Kentucky Derby.
