Firing Line 5/1 to win Preakness
PIMLICO, BALTIMORE (The Spread) – After finishing as the runner up to American Pharoah in the Kentucky Derby, Firing Line has 5/1 odds to win the Preakness Stakes.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, only American Pharoah has better odds than Firing Line to win this year’s Preakness, which takes place on Saturday, May 16. American Pharoah is the favorite at 5/6, followed by Firing Line at 5/1 and Dortmund at 11/2. Those three horses finished first, second and third, respectively in the Kentucky Derby.
Firing Line was 9/1 to win the Kentucky Derby before finishing second behind American Pharoah. That was Firing Line’s sixth consecutive race finishing either first or second, which included a win in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby on March 22 and second in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis on February 7.
A year ago Commanding Curve finished second in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness before finishing ninth in the Belmont. In 2013, Golden Soul finished second to Orb in the Kentucky Derby and also skipped the Preakness before finishing ninth in the Belmont (ironically, given Commanding Curve’s finish).
The last runner up in the Kentucky Derby to compete in the Preakness Stakes was Bodemeister, who also finished second at Pimlico behind I’ll Have Another (who also won the Kentucky Derby). Perhaps Bodemeister provides hope to Firing Line to have a successful run on Saturday.
