That said, Animal Kingdom does have company as far as the odds go for the Preakness. Both Animal Kingdom and Dialed In have opened as +400 money line favorites to win this year’s Preakness, this according to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com.
Animal Kingdom surprised many observers by winning the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 7. He was a 30/1 long shot to win coming into the week of the Derby, but jockey John Velazquez rode Animal Kingdom to his first career victory at the Kentucky Derby. Even though bettors knew it was a wide-open field at Churchill Downs, not many so-called experts had Animal Kingdom winning the roses.
Dialed In was one of the bigger disappointments at this year’s Kentucky Derby. He spent most of the race in the back before making his move down the stretch. He did finish eighth, but he had been favored coming into the race and seeing as how his top competition Uncle Mo was scratched the day before, bettors expected more out of the colt. Obviously oddsmakers haven’t lost faith in him though, as his opening odds are on par with Animal Kingdom heading into the Preakness.
Other odds of note: Shackleford is +800 after finishing fourth at the Kentucky Derby, while Mucho Macho Man is +600 after finishing third. Nehro, the second place finisher at the Kentucky Derby, is +500 to win the Preakness. Sway Away, the horse that was bounced from the Kentucky Derby just days before the race, is currently +1000 to win the Preakness.
