Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com currently list Stay Thirsty’s odds to win the 2011 Kentucky Derby at +1500. Those are a stark contrast from his odds on Monday, which stood at +3000. (Stay Thirsty’s odds were also +2500 when the post positions were drawn on Wednesday.)

It’s interesting that Stay Thirsty’s odds have improved throughout the week, because he did not fair well in his last outing. At the Florida Derby (Grade 1) on April 3, he finished seventh behind (among others) Kentucky Derby favorite Dialed In. Stay Thirsty did win his only other race of the year, however, finishing first at the Gotham (Grade 3) on March 5.

Stay Thirsty also received a great draw on Wednesday when the post positions for the Kentucky Derby were announced. He’ll be coming out of the No. 4 post today, which has produced 11 Derby winners since 1900. Only the rail and the No. 5 post (which have each produced 12 wins apiece) have won more times.

Observers believe that Stay Thirsty’s effort at the Florida Derby was not a good representation of how he should run on Saturday at the Kentucky Derby. Bettors can probably expect a better effort, although will he finish in the money? That, of course, is the question.
