BETTING OVERVIEW: When doing your prep for this year's Kentucky Derby, don't eliminate Shagaf just because he finished fifth in the Wood Memorial, which was his final prep for Churchill Downs. The Wood Memorial was the first time Shagaf ran on a muddy track and despite the poor surface, he fought to the finish line while finishing four lengths behind Outwork. Prior to that poor showing, he was unbeaten in three starts and had a 110 Equibase Speed Figure. All of that being said, with only four career starts and a poor prep coming into Saturday, can Shagaf rebound? There's no doubting his talent, but if you invest in Shagaf at Churchill Downs you're doing so with the belief that the Wood Memorial was an aberration.
