Three Derby Contenders to Consider
The greatest two minutes in sports is rapidly approaching. Here are three contenders to consider adding to your card on Saturday for the 2018 Kentucky Derby.
Contender 1: Magnum Moon
Magnum Moon is coming off a victory in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and also won the Grade II Rebel Stakes two starts ago. He does have a tendency to draft, which often indicates that the horse is tired. That said, Magnum Moon drifts only when he is in front and has won all of his races by several lengths. He has excellent tactical speed and has won big races this year. I like him to at least show. At 6/1, he offers great value for a horse that could win.
Contender 2: Justify
Justify is the chalk at 3/1 but he still offers good value with those odds. He's one of the most impressive horses in the field and showed his vast potential in his Santa Anita Derby victory over Bolt D'Oro. At the time of the race, no three-year-old had posted a triple-digit Beyer speed figure and Justify posted a 104 in his first start. Granted, he did not compete as a juvenile so he lacks experience. That said, his trainer Bob Baffert was overheard telling people at Churchill Downs that Justify is the next American Pharoah, who raced fives times before the Derby and lost in his debut. That's some elite company for Justify.
Contender 3: Audible
This Todd Pletcher horse is 8/1 is on a four-win streak after losing his first run back in September of last year. The Grade 1 Florida Derby winner has the pedigree of a speed horse, which could be problematic given the distance of the Kentucky Derby. That said, he hasn't shown any signs that he can't run distance if he's pushed. An improving horse, Audible could surprise after a nice week of practice at Churchill Downs.
