Shackleford Kentucky Derby Odds
(The Spread) – After finishing second at the Florida Derby in early April, can Shackleford surprise this weekend at the Kentucky Derby?
Odds: Shackleford’s odds have improved throughout the week. Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com listed him as a +2000 money line long shot at the beginning of the week, but now Shackleford’s odds have improved to +1200 on the money line. Dialed In is the favorite at +300, while Uncle Mo is +350 and Nehro is +500.
Race History: Outside of one outing late in February, Shackleford has ran well this year. He finished first at an Allowance on February 5, but then took fifth at the Fountain of Youth (Grade 2) later that month. He rebounded at the Florida Derby (Grade 1), however, finishing second behind none other than Kentucky Derby favorite Dialed In.
Post Position: It wasn’t a pretty draw for Shackleford on Wednesday, as he received the No. 14 post position. That gate has produced just two winners at the Kentucky Derby, although that’s two more winners that the No. 17 and No. 19 positions so it’s all in how you look at the situation. Still, Shackleford could have a tough time coming from the outside.
Outlook: Obviously this contender has talent because he showed it at the Florida Derby by finishing second to Dialed In. But Shackleford is a candidate to come out of the gates strong only to fade down the stretch. And given his bad post position draw, this might be a horse to pass on this weekend. That said, if he ran with Dialed In once, there’s no reason to believe that he can’t do it again.
