Optimizer Derby Odds & Preview
LOUISVILLE, KY (The Spread) – 2012 Kentucky Derby contender Optimizer is listed among the long shots to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.
According to oddsmakers Optimizer is a 50/1 long shot to win this year’s Kentucky Derby, while Bodemeister is a 4/1 favorite. Union Rags has the next best odds at 7/2 while Gemologist is 5/1 and Dullahan is 8/1.
Optimizer is coming off a disappointing showing in the Grade I Arkansas Derby when he finished ninth behind Bodemeister, Secret Circle and Sabercat (among others). He also placed second at the Grade II Rebel on March 17, ninth at the Grade II Risen Star on February 25 and sixth at the Smarty Jones on January 16.
Bluegrass Hall LLC are the owners of Optimizer while D. Wayne Lukas is his trainer and Jon Court is his jockey. Lukas last one the Kentucky Derby back in 1999 when he trained Charismatic and he also posted back-to-back wins at the Derby in 1995 (Thunder Gulch) and 1996 (Grindstone). His first victory at the Kentucky Derby came back in 1988 when he trained Winning Colors to victory.
Optimizer had the fortunate of drawing the No. 2 post position for Saturday’s race. The No. 2 post has won the Derby nine times since 1900.
The 2012 Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The post positions will be drawn on Wednesday and we’ll have coverage leading up to the race on Saturday so make sure you check out The Spread for more horse racing content.
