Black Onyx Derby Odds
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - Even though he owns the rail, Black Onyx remains a massive long shot to win the 2013 Kentucky Derby this Saturday.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Black Onyx is 50/1 long shots to win this weekend's Kentucky Derby. Both Verrazano and Orb are the favorites at 4/1, while Goldencents is 11/2 and Normandy Invasion is 9/1. Meanwhile, Revolutionary is 10/1, Itsmyluckyday is 12/1, and both Overanalyze and Vyjack are 14/1.
Black Onyx has drawn the rail, which has produced 12 Kentucky Derby winners all-time. Only the No. 5 post position has as many wins as the rail, while the No. 4 post position has produced four Derby winners.
Look at his race history, Black Onyx is coming off back-to-back wins, although only one of those races was graded (the Grade III Spiral Stakes on March 23). Previously to those two victories, Black Onyx placed fourth in an Allowance on January 1, won a MSW on November 11 of last year, and placed second in his first career race.
Kelly Breen is Black Onyx's trainer while Joe Bravo is his jockey. Breen's first Kentucky Derby appearance was in 2009, saddling West Side Bernie (9th) and Atomic Rain (16th). Breen also won the 2011 Belmont Stakes with Ruler on Ice.
