Java's War Kentucky Derby Odds
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - After winning the Grade I Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Java's War heads into this weekend looking for a solid showing in the 2013 Kentucky Derby.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Java's War is 30/1 to win Saturday's Kentucky Derby race from Churchill Downs. The current favorite is Verrazano at 7/2, while Orb is 5/1 and Goldencents and Revolutionary are 7/1, respectively. Normandy Invasion is also 8/1 and Itsmyluckyday is 12/1.
As previously mentioned, Java's War took first place at the Grade I Blue Grass on April 13, beating, among others, Kentucky Derby contenders Palace Malice and Charming Kitten. He also took second in the Grade II Tampa Bay Derby on March 9, which was his only other outing in 2013. To conclude 2012, Java's War finished sixth at the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club and placed third at the Grade I Breeders' Futurity.
Kenny McPeek is Java War's trainer and Julien Leparoux is his jockey. McPeek's best finish in the Kentucky Derby came in 1995 with Tejano Run, who finished second. Leparoux, meanwhile, is a five-time Breeders' Cup winner and grew up around racing in Chantilly, France.
Java's War earned 122 points this year and took home $201,772 in earnings. He'll compete as one of the mid-range long shots in this year's Kentucky Derby, which is on Saturday, May 4. Post time for the event is 6:24PM ET and can be seen on NBC.
