Paddy O’prado Update
Grade 3 winner Paddy O’prado enters Saturday’s Kentucky Derby 136 race as a mid-range long shot. Can he overcome the odds and produce a victory at Churchill Downs?
Recent History:
Paddy O’prado is coming off a second place showing at the G1 Blue Grass on April 10 in which he finished second to 2010 Kentucky Derby contender Stately Victor. He also won the G3 Palm Beach, beating out Derby rival Dean’s Kitten with a time of 1:45.40.
When the post positions were drawn on Wednesday of this week, Paddy O’prado was a 22/1 long shot to win this Saturday at the Kentucky Derby. But according to oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com, the 3-year-old colt is now 18/1 to win at Churchill Hills.
Paddy O’prado will start out of the No. 10 post position on Saturday, which has produced 10 winners in the Kentucky Derby since 1900. Only the rail and the No. 5 post positions have produced more victories (12) than the No. 10 position (which also has the same number of wins as the No. 4 and No. 8 positions).
Outlook:
Most of Paddy O’prado’s experience has come on turf and his only dirt race ended in a seventh place finish (albeit in slop). That said, he has a couple of intangibles working in his favor, including his post position (as previously noted, the No. 10 position has produced 10 winners in the Derby) and his jockey, Kent Desormeaux, who has already won three titles. But despite these key trends, Paddy O’prado just doesn’t have enough experience on dirt to compete with some of the other contenders. Still, given his efforts in long-distance races this season, he’s an intriguing contender.
