Kentucky Derby Post Positions

2014 Kentucky Derby post positions odds contenders horse racing

CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - The official post positions for the 2014 Kentucky Derby have been drawn and Vicar's In Trouble has pulled the rail for Saturday's race.

Vicar's In Trouble drew the rail for this weekend's Kentucky Derby while Harry's Holliday will start from the No. 2 post and Uncle Sigh will come out of the No. 3 gate. The following post positions are as follows: No. 4 Danza; No. 5 California Chrome; No. 6 Samraat; No. 7 We Miss Artie; No. 8 General A Rod; No. 9 Vinceremos; No. 10. Wildcat Red; No. 11 Hoppertunity; No. 12 Dance With Fate; No. 13 Chitu; No. 14 Medal Count; No. 15 Tapiture; No. 16 Intense Holiday; No. 17 Commanding Curve; No. 18 Candy Boy; No. 19 Ride On Curlin; No. 20 Wicked Strong.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, California Chrome remains the favorite at 11/5, while Wicked Strong is 15/2 and Hoppertunity is 7/1. Intense Holiday and Danza are both 11/1, respectively, while Samraat is 15/1 and both Ride On Curlin and Wildcat Red are both 16/1, respectively.

Continuing with the current odds, Candy Boy and Dance With Fate are 20/1, respectively, while Tapiture, Vicar's In Trouble and General A Rod are all 25/1, respectively, while Uncle Sigh, Medal Count and Chitu are 35/1, respectively. Commanding Curve is 55/1, while Harry's Holiday, Vinceremos and We Miss Artie are 65/1, respectively. Those last three contenders have the worst odds in the field.

Last year Orb won the Derby out of the No. 16 post position while Golden Soul placed second from the No. 4 post and Revolutionary finished third from the No. 3 gate. It was the second time in three years that the contender that came out of the No. 16 post won the Derby, so Intense Holiday might be your horse if you think lightning will strike again. In fact, the No. 16 post has produced four winners since 1995.

If you think the rail makes for a good post position to bet, know that the No. 1 gate hasn't produced a winner since Winning Colors in 1988. The No. 20 post position hasn't fared much better, although it did produce a winner in 2008 when Kent Desormeaux rode Big Brown to victory.

The No. 5 post position has produced four winners since 1970, which includes back-to-back winners in 2002 (War Emblem) and 2003 (Funny Cide). The No. 8 post has also had some success, posting four wins since 1970, including 50/1 long shot Mine That Bird in 2009 and 2006's Barbaro.

(Editor's Note: Hoppertunity was scratched on Thursday and Pablo Del Monte will not run, so the post positions below have been updated to reflect the latest gates.)
