Samraat Kentucky Derby Odds
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) – Given Samraat’s recent race history, it’s a wonder why he doesn’t have better odds to win the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Samraat is 18/1 to win this week’s Kentucky Derby, which give him the same odds as fellow contenders Ride On Curlin and Vicar’s in Trouble. For comparison’s sake, California Chrome is an 11/5 favorite to win at Churchill Downs on Saturday, while Wicked Strong has the next-best odds at 15/2.
Samraat has dominated over his last six races, winning five of those six starts. In his most recent race, he finished second behind Wicked Strong in the Wood Memorial, which is a Grade 1 race. He also won a MSW on October 23, an Allowance on November 22, the Damon Runyon on December 18, the Grade 3 Witers on February 1, and the Grade 3 Gotham on March 1. In his last two wins, he beat out Uncle Sigh each time.
"He's run six times and one horse has beaten him. I'll take that anywhere," said trainer Rick Violette Jr., who saddled his only prior Kentucky Derby contender, Read the Footnotes, to a seventh-place finish in 2004. "Even that race (the Wood) he went through a couple inter-race schooling victories. He had never been surrounded before ... that was the first time he had horses in front of him and behind him and beside him and he handled that well.
"He's literally done everything we've asked, sometimes things just work out. We got lucky enough after he broke his maiden to get an allowance race to go at 71/2 furlongs and then he gets his first two-turn experience in a couple of the open races. Everything kind of has worked out from Day One."
At 18/1 odds, Samraat looks like a solid value bet for this Saturday’s race, which will take place at 6:24PM ET (post time).
