Alpha Derby Preview & Odds
LOUISVILLE, KY (The Spread) – With victories in two of his last three outings, Alpha looks like an intriguing contender at the 2012 Kentucky Derby.
Oddsmakers currently list Alpha at 11/1 to win this year’s Kentucky Derby, giving him the exact odds as fellow contender Creative Cause. Bodemeister and Union Rags are currently the favorites at 7/2, while Gemologist is 7/1 and Dullahan is 8/1.
Alpha placed second in his most recent race, which came on April 7 at the Grade 1 Wood Memorial. He also won the Grade 3 Withers on February 4 and the Count Fleet on January 7. He showed marked improvement in those races considering he finished 11th in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November of last year.
Although he hasn’t beaten fellow Kentucky Derby contenders such as Gemologist (who won the Grade 1 Wood Memorial back in early April) and Union rags (who finished second at the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November), the talent is clearly there in Alpha. It’s just a matter of if he can build off of his last three races.
The 2012 Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs in Lousiville, Kentucky. Alpha’s trainer is Kiaran McLaughlin while his jockey is Ramon A. Dominguez, who has yet to win a Triple Crown race despite his many accomplishments.Want More From TheSpread.com? Follow us on Twitter and Facebook or Subscribe to Our News Feeds!
