El Kabeir Kentucky Derby Preview
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) – Could El Kabeir and his jockey Calvin Borel be a sleeper to win the 2015 Kentucky Derby?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, El Kabeir is 33/1 to win the Kentucky Derby this year, giving him the same odds as Far Right. American Pharoah is favored to win at 9/4 while Dortmund is 9/2 and Carpe Diem is 7/1.
El Kabeir placed third in the Wood Memorial behind Frosted and Tencendur on April 4 and won the Grade 3 Gotham on March 7. He also placed second in the Grade 3 Withers Stakes and won both the Grade 3 Jerome Stakes and the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club.
Borel won the Kentucky Derby in 2007, 2009 and 2010 and is usually a fan favorite of those betting at Churchill Downs. Based on his race history, El Kabeir has been consistent in terms of finishing in the money (outside of a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Champagne). He could be a nice value at 33/1.
