Hoppertunity Kentucky Derby Odds
(Editor's Note: Hoppertunity has been scratched due to a sore left foot.)
CHURCHILL DOWNS, KY (The Spread) - 2014 Kentucky Derby contender Hoppertunity will try not to play second-fiddle to California Chrome for the second-straight race.
On April 5 Hoppertunity placed second in the Santa Anita Derby, which should be enough to encourage bettors to take a look at the colt for Saturday's Kentucky Derby. The problem wasn't the finish, but who Hoppertunity finished behind.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, California Chrome is currently a 12/5 favorite to win this year's Kentucky Derby. And after beating out Hoppertunity (among others) at the Santa Anita Derby, why wouldn't California Chrome be favored to win at Churchill Downs? After all, it was his fourth consecutive victory and his fifth win in seven starts.
Hoppertunity, meanwhile, is currently listed with 12/1 odds to win Saturday's Kentucky Derby, which put him behind California Chrome (12/5), Wicked Strong (7/1) and Danza (9/1). Intense Holiday and Samraat are also 16/1, respectively, while Dance With Fate and Ride On Curlin are both 20/1, respectively.
Looking at Hoppertunity's latest race results, he won the Rebel Stakes on March 15 by beating out Tapiture (28/1 to win on Saturday) and Ride On Curlin, and also finished fourth at the Grade 2 Risen Star on February 22. In the Risen Star, Intense Holiday won while beating out Albano and Vicar's In Trouble, the latter of which is currently 22/1 to win the Kentucky Derby.
For bettors looking at Hoppertunity to potentially upset the field at Churchill Downs is that you don't know what horse you're going to get. He wasn't close to catching California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby but was also a good three and a half lengths ahead of Candy Body. If he starts fast then he has a shot, but Hoppertunity is just as capable of finishing out of the top 10 as he as of placing.
The 2014 Kentucky Derby will take place on May 3 at approximately 6:24PM ET (post time).
