According to oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com, Edgar had a betting line of +550 to win the title, meaning a $100 bet on Edgar will pay out an additional $550.
Edgar used his quick feet and wrestling to work his way to the decision win. Edgar struggled with Penn’s quick jab all night, but managed to scatter in some takedowns and land combinations of kicks and strikes to get the victory. Each round was very close but all three judges ultimately found the fight in favor of Edgar, with one judge even scoring it 50-45 in favor of the challenger. Edgar’s win was about as big of an upset as you can get in the UFC and has to be the biggest upset since Matt Serra defeated Georges St. Pierre back at UFC 69.
In the co-main event, Anderson Silva (-800) defeated Demian Maia by unanimous decision in a fight that seemed to do less for Silva despite the victory. Silva established his ability to dominate Maia in the early rounds and then resorted to upstaging his opponent with taunts and dances for the final half of the fight. Maia remained game and did what he could, but Silva’s skills were simply too great for him. Silva could have ended the fight, but seemed disinterested as the fight went on. Fans and UFC officials were not happy with the champion’s performance.
