Opening Day Matchups
The 2010 MLB Season is off and running. Boston defeated the New York Yankees 9-7 last night, with the series resuming on Tuesday.
There’s still plenty of great matchups on Monday as teams send their aces to the mound. Here’s a look at four of the better games at BroburySports.com:
Chris Carpenter (17-4, 2.24 ERA) vs. Aaron Harang (6-14, 4.21 ERA)
Carpenter forms one of the best one-two punches in starting pitching along with Adam Wainwright. Harang needs to regain his 2007 form, when he was one of the best pitchers in the NL. The up-and-coming Reds could surprise with a big year.
Chicago Cubs (+110) at Atlanta 4:10 PM
Carlos Zambrano (9-7, 3.77 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (15-10, 4.67 ERA)
Zambrano is still a legitimate ace, but the Cubs’ bats need to have a much better year. Lowe had his highest ERA since 2004 in Boston, and there was even talk he might be traded. However, he’s a steady guy who should bounce back nicely this season.
San Francisco (-130) at Houston 7:05 PM
Tim Lincecum (15-7, 2.48 ERA) vs. Roy Oswalt (8-6, 4.12 ERA)
Lincecum is the current two-time NL Cy Young award winner. He leads one of the best staffs in the majors with Matt Cain also ace quality. The bats are supposed to be improved, but by how much? Oswalt got an incredible amount of no-decisions last year and had the highest ERA of his career. Houston is not expected to be much improved.
Minnesota (+110) at LA Angels 10:05 PM
Scott Baker (15-9, 4.37 ERA) vs. Jered Weaver (16-8, 3.75 ERA)
Neither of these pitchers are dominate aces, but each are top-of-the rotation guys on balanced staffs.
Both teams could very easily win their divisions despite problems. Minnesota lost closer Joe Nathan for the season. They will be going with closer-by-committee, which is usually a recipe for disaster L.A. lost John Lackey, Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero to free agency. This organization has lots of depth and it will be tested.
