Potential Friday Upsets

Friday’s first-round upset specials are here to go along with our Thursday edition. Here’s the latest from BroburySports.com.

Bet 2010 March Madness Odds

Gonzaga (+1 ½) over Florida State

WCC Gonzaga is the eighth seed and Florida State the ninth. The ninth seed has actually won more of these matchups over the years, and FSU is the small favorite here.

ACC Florida State is one of the nation’s best teams in field goal defense. They did a good job getting 10 wins in the conference, but they lost to Duke once and Maryland twice. Gonzaga played a very tough non-conference schedule, and it should pay off here.

The Zags take this one.

Siena (+4) over Purdue

4th seed Purdue is only a four-point favorite over a 13th seed. That shows how decimated they are by the loss of forward Robbie Hummel. Hummel was a ‘glue guy’ and one of only three real scorers on the team. Now they’re left with E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson, but not much else.

13th seed Siena is out of the MACC. This squad made a huge impression last year when it upset Ohio State in the first round as a ninth seed. They almost beat a great Louisville team in the next round. Most of the key players are back and the Saints won’t be intimidated against the Big Ten.

I think Siena wins outright.

Vermont (+17 ½) over Syracuse

Big East Syracuse held on to a No. 1 seed despite losing their last two games. That includes their Big East tourney opener to Georgetown. Center Arinze Onuaku (quad) will miss this game, although he’s expected back for the weekend. The Orange only play seven guys and this loss hurts big time.

16th seed Vermont got the automatic bid by winning the America East Conference championship. This team is led by 6-foot-5 forward Marqus Blakely, and doesn’t have the size to match up with Syracuse. The Onuaku injury evens it out a bit.

The Catamounts won’t be the first No. 16 seed to take down a No. 1, but the points do look enticing.
