The 2009 drama film “Precious” has been made a long shot to win Best Picture at the 2010 Academy Awards, but can it produce an upset?
“Precious” is based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire and was directed by Lee Daniels. It stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd. The movie is based in Harlem and it’s about an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child and who is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction.
Along with the film being up for Best Picture, Daniels is up for Best Director and Gabourey Sidibe is up for Best Actress. In total, “Precious” has been nominated for six awards at the 82nd Oscars.
“Precious” faces stiff competition to win Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards. “Avatar” is –250 on the money line and is a heavy favorite, while “The Hurt Locker” is +120 and “Up in the Air” is +800. Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com has made “Precious” +2500 on the money line to win Best Picture, making it one of the category’s underdogs.
