Combining jumping and cross-country skiing, the Men’s Nordic Combined Normal Hill event will be a true test of endurance at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

According to, in this event, the jumping portion occurs first followed by a free technique cross-country race. A Nordic combined team is made up of four athletes. Each competitor jumps once on the large hill. The team results are added together and the team with the highest aggregate score starts first in the cross-country ski portion. The cross-country ski is a relay where each team member skis 5 kilometers. The team with the first skier across the finish line wins.

For this event, the United States is heavily favored to win the gold medal.

USA has odds of 10/11 to win the gold medal in this event according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Austria (9/2), Norway (6/1), and Germany (6/1).

The United States has not won a medal in this event in the last two Olympic games and not placed in the world championships. They were seventh at the 2006 Olympics and fourth at the 2002 games. The U.S. does have three members on its team that placed in the top six of the Nordic combined normal hill event at this Olympics.

Austria won the gold medal in this event at the 2006 Olympics and also took bronze in 2002. They have not placed in the world championship events since 2006.

Norway took third in the 2009 world championships for this event and did the same in 2007. They didn’t place at the 2006 Olympics while taking fifth in 2002.

Germany won silver in the 2006 and 2002 Olympics while taking second in the 2007 and 2009 world championships.
