According to vancouver2010.com, giant slalom is similar to the slalom, with fewer, wider and smoother turns. Each skier makes two runs down two different courses on the same slope. Both runs take place on the same day. Usually the first run is held in the morning and the second in the afternoon. The times for both runs are then combined with the fastest total time determining the winner.

Austrian Kathrin Zettel is favored to win the gold in this event.

Zettel has odds of 10/3 to win the gold medal in this event according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Kathrin Hoelzl (5/1), Tanja Poutiainen (6/1), and Tina Maze (8/1).

Zettel is a seven-time event winner in the World Cup for the giant slalom, with the most recent win coming on Jan. 16, 2010. She is the 2009 world champion in the super combined.

Hoelzl is a German skier and is the defending world champion in this event. She also holds two World Cup event wins in the last four months.
