The downhill skiing event features the highest speeds and longest courses in alpine skiing, and the women’s event is identical to the men’s except for a shorter course. Each athlete makes a single run down one course. The fastest time determines who will take home the gold medal.

In this Olympics, United States downhill skier Lindsey Vonn is favored to win the gold with even odds to win according to online sports book SBGGLOBAL. Other short odds to win are Anja Paerson (23/4) Maria Riesch (10/1) and Elisabeth Gorgl (16/1).

Despite a recent shin injury suffered while training in Austria, Vonn, 26, is still favored to take the gold. She is the first American woman to win back-to-back overall World Cup championships.  She has more World Cup wins than any American woman and has four World Championship medals, including two gold medals in 2009.

Swedish alpine skiier, Anja Paerson has seven World Championship gold medals and two Overall Alpine Skiing World Cup titles on her resume. She is also the reigning Olympic champion in the slalom after taking the gold in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. Paerson, 28, also took a bronze in the 2006 Winter Olympics for downhill. She has won a total of 41 World cup races.

German skier Maria Riesch, 25, ended Lindsey Vonn’s perfect downhill record this season by winning a World Cup downhill race in January. The 2010 Winter Olympics is her first Olympic debut. In 2009, this almost six foot-tall skiier, won a World Championship in slalom and also a World Cup bronze for downhill in 2009.
Up and coming Austrian alpine skier, Elisabeth Gorgl 28, won her first giant slalom World Cup race in 2008.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and began on Friday, Feb. 12. and will be concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on which skier will win the women’s downhill, see below.
