According to vancouver2010.com, in this event, the jumping portion occurs first followed by a free technique cross-country race. In the normal hill event, competitors begin with one ski jump on the normal hill, followed by a 10-kilometre cross-country ski race which usually consists of four, 2.5 kilometer laps. The first skier across the finish line is the winner.

A two-time Olympic medalist in Nordic combined, Magnus Moan, is favored to win.

Moan has odds of 9/2 to win the gold medal in this event according to online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. Other short odds to win are Jason Lamy Chappuis (11/2), Hannu Manninen (11/2), and Felix Gottwald (7/1).

Moan won the silver medal in the 2006 Olympics for the 7.5km sprint and he won the bronze for the 15km individual. In 2009, he was part of the 20km relay team that took bronze.

Chappuis competes for France and he won the bronze in the 2009 world championships for 10km mass start and 10km large hill.

Manninen competes for Finland and most of his success has come in relay events, where he has three Olympic medals and five world championship medals.

Gottwald competes for Austria and he is the 2006 Olympic gold winner for the sprint and the relay while winning the silver in the 15km individual.
