In this event, the 20-kilometer race is skied over five laps. The biathlete shoots four times at any shooting lane following each lap in the order of prone, standing, prone, standing, totaling 20 targets. For each missed target a fixed penalty time of one minute is added to the skiing time of the biathlete. Competitors' starts are staggered, normally by 30 seconds. The gold medal winner is the individual with the best overall time.

2008 world champion, Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway is favored to win the gold in this event.

Svendsen enters the Olympics with odds of 2/1 according to online sports book SBGGLOBAL. Other short odds to win are Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (4/1), Christoph Sumann (9/1), and Michael Greis (10/1).

Svendsen won the 2008 world championship in this event, but it is his only medal for the individual race in world competition. Svendsen is also among the favorites to win the pursuit and sprint events.

Bjoerndalen, another competitor from Norway, is the defending world champion in this event and also has a gold medal in this event from the 2002 Olympics. In the 2006 Olympics, he finished with the silver. In the 2008 world championships, Bjoerndalen finished second behind Svendsen in the 20km individual race.

Sumann, a biathlete from Austria, finished with the silver in two events in the 2009 world championships. Sumann has never medaled in this event on the world stage.

Greis, a biathlete from Germany, won the 2006 Olympic gold for this event and he also was the silver medalist for this race in the 2007 and 2005 world championships.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada beginning Friday, Feb. 12. and concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on the biathlon men’s 20km individual, see below.
