This event will be done in classical form and all competitors will begin at the same time from the same starting point. The gold medal winner will be the first to complete the course, much like in a marathon for runners.

Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk and Finland’s Virpi Kuitunen are the favorites to take home the gold in this event.

Kuitunen and Kowalczyk enter the Olympics with odds of 3/1 according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Marit Bjoergen (4/1) and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen (5/1).

Kuitunen is the 2007 world champion of this event, and she also was second in 2005. She had not medaled in this event in the Olympics.

Kowalczyk is the 2009 world champion in the 30km and won the bronze in the 30km in the 2006 Olympics, but both were contested as freestyle events, while this year’s event is in classical format.

Bjoergen, who represents Norway, is the 2005 world champion in this event. She has two silver medals from past Olympics, but neither were for the 30km race.

Saarinen skies for Finland, and she has never won a world championship in this event. She has three world titles from the 2009 competition, but they were in sprint events. She placed 17th in the 2006 Olympics for the 30km race.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada beginning Friday, Feb. 12. and concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on the women’s 30 kilometer mass start cross country skiing event, see below
