Biathlon Men's Pursuit

In just its third appearance in Olympic history, the Biathlon Men’s 12.5 Kilometer Pursuit is a sports that combines skiing and shooting in a pursuit-style race.

In this event, the top 60 finishers in the 10 kilometer sprint can compete in the pursuit. The sprint winner starts the race and the racer's final deficit behind sprint winner corresponds to their starting deficit in the pursuit. Competitors race over five loops of a 2.5 kilometer skiing course, shooting twenty times after each loop. 10 shots are prone and 10 shots are standing. Each miss requires a competitor to ski a 150-meter penalty loop.

One of the young stars of the sports, Emil Hegle Svendsen, is favored to win the gold in this event.

Svendsen enters the Olympics with odds of 5/2 according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (3/1), The Field (5/1), and Dominik Landertinger (12/1).

Svendsen represents Norway, and he holds three world championships, but non are in the pursuit. He was part of the 2009 world championship relay team, and his last pursuit title came in the 2004 Youth & Junior World Championships.

Bjoerndalen is also a biathlete out of Norway. He won the inaugural gold medal in this event and three other events in the 2002 Olympics. He came up with silver in the 2006 Olympics. He is also the three-time defending world champion for the pursuit.

Landertinger hails from Austria, and he is the 2009 world champion in the 15km mass start. He has yet to win a gold medal on the world stage for the pursuit.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada beginning Friday, Feb. 12. and concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on the biathlon men’s 12.5km pursuit, see below.
