The women’s pursuit is a 15 kilometer race that is broken up into two different 7.5 kilometer sections. The first 7.5 kilometers is done in classical style while the second 7.5 kilometers is done freestyle. At the midway point, skiers will change skis and poles, similar to a pit stop in NASCAR.

For this event, 2009 world champion, Justyna Kowalczyk, is favored to take home the gold medal.

Kowalczyk enters the event with odds of 3/1 to win the gold according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Charlotte Kalla (5/1), Marit Bjoergen (5/1), and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen (6/1).

Kowalczyk, who represents Poland, won the 2009 world championship in this event and also in the 30 kilometer skiing event. In the 2006 Olympics, Kowalczyk took bronze in the 30 kilometer race. Kowalczyk placed eighth in the 2006 Olympics in this event.

Kalla, who represents Sweden, has won a variety of golf medals in world cup skiing and junior ski championships for the pursuit in shorter distances. In 2007, she placed seventh in this event in the 2007 Nordic World Ski Championships.

Bjoergen, who represents Norway, competed in this event in the 2006 Olympics, but was unable to finish the race. She won the silver medal in the 2005 world championships for this event, but hasn’t won an Olympic or world championship for the pursuit in her career.

Saarinen, who hails from Finland, took home the bronze in the 2009 world championships in this event. She also placed sixth in the 2007 world championships.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada beginning Friday, Feb. 12. and concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on who will win the Women’s Cross Country Pursuit, see below.
