The pursuit is a 30 kilometer race that is broken up into two different 15 kilometer sections. The first 15 kilometers is done in classical style while the second 15 kilometers is done freestyle. At the midway point, skiers will change skis and poles, similar to a pit stop in NASCAR.

For this event, 2009 world champion, Petter Northug, is favored to take home the gold medal.

Northug enters the event with odds of 10/13 to win the gold according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Dario Cologna (8/1), Anders Sodergren (10/1), and Tobias Angerer (10/1).

Northug, who represents Norway, won the 2009 world championships gold medal in this event. He is the favorite as opposed to 2006 gold medal winner, Yevgeny Dementyev, as the defending Olympic champion tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) back in August of 2009.

Cologna, a Swiss skier, recently defeated Northug at the 2009 Tour de Ski, which is a much longer skiing event over a period of days. Cologna has not competed in the Olympics in this event.

Sodergren, who represents Sweden, won the silver in the 2009 World Championships for this event, his only medal in the pursuit in his career.

Dementyev, a German skier, took home silver in this event in the 2007 World Championships. He won silver in the 2006 Olympics for the 4 X 10 kilometer event.

The 2010 Winter Olympics take place from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada beginning Friday, Feb. 12. and concluding Sunday, Feb. 28. For complete odds on who will win the Men’s Cross Country Pursuit, see below.
