RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -The Carolina Hurricanes trimmed their roster to 25 on Wednesday, returning first-round pick Brandon Sutter to the juniors and sending goalie Michael Leighton and forward Trevor Gillies to the AHL affiliate in Albany.
Sutter’s return to juniors was expected. Ater the Hurricanes made Sutter the 11th pick, general manager Jim Rutherford said he expected Sutter to be sent back to Red Deer of the Western Hockey League.
Leighton was acquired from Montreal during the second day of the draft in exchange for a seventh-round pick. Gillies was in Anaheim’s organization last season before signing as a free agent with Carolina in July.
