VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -The Vancouver Canucks claimed forward Kyle Wellwood off waivers on Wednesday in an effort to bolster an offense that struggled to score last season.
The 25-year-old Wellwood is coming off a disappointing season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and they were unlikely to offer the restricted free agent a qualifying offer to retain his rights.
Wellwood had 21 points (8-13) and a minus-12 rating in 59 games last season while earning $950,000, the last year of his contract. He showed promise the previous season when he had 42 points (12-30) in 48 games.
Wellwood has struggled with groin injuries the last two years.
