DETROIT (AP) -Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom had sports hernia surgery Wendesday, a week after helping the Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said it will take Holmstrom about two months to recover from the procedure. Holmstrom is expected to be available for the start of training camp in September.
Holmstrom had 20 goals and 40 points during the regular season, missing most of March because of the sports hernia. He had four goals and 12 points in the playoffs, missing one game.
The Swede has developed over the past decade into one of the NHL’s top players in front of the net, where he distracts goaltenders and deflects pucks past them.
