Detroit improved to 14-13-2 on the season Monday night with a 3-1 home win over Los Angeles. The Red Wings (14-13-2) grabbed a 3-0 advantage through two periods and while goaltender Jimmy Howard lost his shutout in the third, he still managed to stop 42 of 43 shots sent his way to guide his squads to victory. Rookie defenseman Dennis Cholowski scored his fifth goal of the season to give Detroit a 1-0 lead in the first, while Frans Nielsen and Dylan Larkin scored goals in the second period. Christoffer Ehn, Jacob De La Rose, Thomas Vanek and Andreas Athanasiou each had one assist.

Capitals shut out Blue Jackets

Washington scored three first-period goals and eased to a 4-0 shutout win Saturday night at Columbus. Braden Holtby turned away all 28 shots sent his way to blank the hosts. Brett Connolly gave the Capitals (17-9-3) a 1-0 lead early in the first period on assists from Jakub Vrana and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Dmitrij Jaskin scored his first goal of the season to make it 2-0 on assists from Travis Boyd and Dmitry Orlov, whileAlex Ovechkin added his 22nd goal of the season with 19 seconds left in the first with Michael Kempny and John Carlson assisting. Boyd added an insurance goal in the third on assists from Ovechkin and Nic Dowd.

NHL Betting Trends

Detroit

The Red Wings are 0-4 in their last four games after allowing two or fewer goals in their previous game. Detroit is 1-5 in its last six meetings in Washington.

Washington

The Capitals are 6-0 in their last six games versus the Eastern Conference. Washington is 7-2 in the last nine meetings overall.

Prediction:

The Red Wings are going to be the more weary team here and Washington is in good form plus at home with a couple days of rest. Detroit has struggled in Washington lately and I can't see that changing much here. Also consider the puck line bet.

NHL DAILY PREDICTION: WASHINGTON CAPITALS -260
