Sabres extend win streak to eight
Buffalo (15-6-2) secured a 3-2 overtime victory Friday night at home over the Canadiens. Jeff Skinner scored the game-winner 3:06 into overtime on assists from Jack Eichel and Rasmus Dahlin. Skinner had also tied it up at 2-2 with 2:26 left in regulation as Sam Reinhart and Zach Bagosian assisted. Casey Mittelstadt scored the first Buffalo goal on assists from Conor Sheary and Jake McCabe as the hosts had a 1-0 lead through one period. Carter Hutton made 31 saves on 33 shots to earn the win.
Red Wings fall at Capitals
Detroit had its modest two-game winning streak snapped Friday night with a 3-1 loss at Washington. The Red Wings (10-10-2) held a 1-0 advantage through one period on a goal by Andreas Athanasiou. It was his 10th score of the season on assists from Thomas Vanek and Danny DeKeyser. The Capitals scored once in the second period to tie it up and then twice in the third to overtake Detroit. Jonathan Bernier surrendered three goals on 20 shots in the losing effort.

Prediction:
The Red Wings have been a surprise after plenty of talk early in the season of them being a frontrunner for the possible top pick in next year’s NHL Draft. But tonight is a prime chance for another quality win over a Sabres squad that is due for a loss. It’s obvious how improved Buffalo is, but it’s still a roster with a few flaws and Detroit has enough young players competing at a high level right now to take advantage. Go with the Red Wings here.
