Perennial All-Star carrying Washington
With Alex Ovechkin spearheading the charge, the Capitals are carving up the Metropolitan Division. Will the defending Western Conference champions be able to put up any resistance tonight?
In order to claim its sixth straight victory, Washington must fend off the Sharks at Verizon Center. Online sports book Bovada.lv gives the host squad odds of -135 to come out on top. Conversely, San Jose represents a +115 underdog.
Ovechkin has gone from relatively cold to scalding hot in a two-week span. The six-time Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy recipient boasts 11 points in his last nine tilts. Most recently, he potted two goals in the Caps’ 4-2 triumph over Florida.
Coach Barry Trotz continues to receive exemplary goaltending from Braden Holtby, too. One year removed from matching Martin Brodeur’s single-season wins record, the native Canadian’s riding a four-game winning streak. Holtby ranks in the league’s top five in both GAA (2.20) and save percentage (.921).
On the other side, Peter DeBoer’s troops have dropped three in a row. Beyond Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns, the offensive punch simply isn’t there. Don’t expect that to change in the nation’s capital.
