2012 NHL Stanley Cup Finals Odds

(The Spread) – The 2012 Stanley Cup Finals odds are out of the 2011-12 NHL season and oddsmakers currently favor a pair of teams.

The Favorites: Canucks & Capitals (7/1)

The Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals have opened as 7/1 favorites to win the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals, respectively. The Canucks are predicted to make another run at the Stanley Cup Finals after losing in seven games to the Boston Bruins in last year’s Finals. The Capitals, meanwhile, were swept by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Conference Semi-Finals but were the top seed in the Eastern Conference and figure to be strong again with Alex Ovechkin at left wing.

Next Best Odds: Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks (10/1)

The Bruins, Penguins and Sharks all have 10/1 odds, respectively, to win this year’s Stanley Cup Finals. As previously mentioned, the Bruins upset the Canucks in last year’s Finals after running through the Canadians, Flyers and Lightning as a No. 3 seed out of the Eastern Conference. The Penguins, meanwhile, labored through a first-round exit at the hands of the Lightning, thanks in large part to not having Sidney Crosby (concussion) on the ice. Crosby’s return has been marred in secrecy as nobody is quite sure when he’ll return. The Sharks were the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last season and reached the Conference Finals before the Canucks eliminated them in five games.

Keep an Eye on: Buffalo Sabres (18/1)

The Sabres were one of the most active teams this summer, acquiring Robyn Regehr and Ales Kotalik from the Flames in exchange for Chris Butler and Paul Byron, and Christian Ehrhoff from the Canucks. Buffalo also added Ville Leino and thanks to its defensive upgrades alone, the Sabres should make the postseason. If Leino and a few of the younger players blossom this season, Buffalo may make even more noise in the postseason than it did over the summer.

The Long Shots: New York Islanders (80/1)

While the Blue Jackets, Panthers, Wild and Senators are all 75/1 to win, respectively, no team has longer odds than the New York Islanders. New York spent last season in the basement of the Atlantic Division, winning just 30 games to its 39 losses. The Islanders have missed the last four postseasons and have finished last in the Atlantic Division every year during that time. With the division being tough again in 2012, don’t expect any miracles this season for the Islanders.
