Can Caps put Flyers on the ropes?
The style points haven’t been as easy to pile up in the playoffs. Nonetheless, the Capitals continue to honor their superlative regular campaign by scoring victories left and right.
Armed with a 2-0 series lead, Washington now takes its show to Philadelphia. Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals commences at 7 p.m. ET, and oddsmakers continue to prefer Barry Trotz’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning bunch. Online sports book Bovada.lv lists the Caps as 1.5-goal favorites tonight. Conversely, the Flyers typify +125 underdogs.
Neither of Washington’s first two victories featured the same level of crispness that marked a 120-point season for the ages. Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson helped ignite the power play over the weekend, though, and Steve Mason’s confidence could be something for Philly coach Dave Hakstol to monitor as this affair progresses. The Flyers did manage to pelt Braden Holtby with 42 shots in Saturday’s 4-1 defeat, so perhaps a combination of quantity and superior scoring chances will translate into a different end result at Wells Fargo Center.
Still, the Capitals are hungry to return to the conference finals for the first time since 1998. They also registered 27 away triumphs, good for second in the NHL. Philadelphia can only fend off Ovechkin and company for so long.
