Brooks Orpik scored the game-winning goal 1:48 into OT off assists by Evgeny Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie. The Capitals got the game rolling in positive fashion as Nicklas Backstrom put the hosts on the board 3:37 in off assists from Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov. The Hurricanes scored later in the first period and again in the second to tie it up through 40 minutes. Tom Wilson gave Washington the lead back at 3-2 with 11:05 remaining on a goal assisted by Ovechkin and Backstrom. Carolina evened it back up with five minutes to go in regulation before the Capitals won it in OT.
Hurricanes unable to secure win
Carolina fell behind 2-0 in its first postseason series in a decade Saturday with a 4-3 overtime loss at Washington. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the Hurricanes cut the deficit in half with a Lucas Wallmark goal with 4:06 left in the first period. Assists on the goal went to Jaccob Slavin and Warren Foegele. Sebastian Aho tied it at 2-2 with 3:11 left in the second period on a goal assisted by Justin Williams and Slavin. After Washington went back ahead in the third, a Jordan Staal power play goal with five minutes remaining evened it back up at 3-3. Carolina
The Hurricanes are 17-35 in the last 52 meetings. The favorite is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
Prediction:
Carolina nearly evened the series but gave up the quick overtime goal in Game 2. Now back home in front of a growing fan base that will be at a fever pitch tonight witnessing the first home playoff game in a decade, I think the Hurricanes have a great shot at evening the series. Washington didn’t make life easy in the first round en route to the Stanley Cup championship a season ago. I wouldn’t expect an easy road this year either.
