Avs unable to hang in Game 1
Colorado could not muster a goal in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals as host Calgary rolled to a 4-0 victory. After a scoreless first period, the Avalanche allowed two goals in the second period followed by two more in the third period as the Flames rolled to the win. Philipp Grubauer surrendered three goals on 31 shots in the losing effort. Colorado mustered 26 shots on goal but could not find the back of the net on any of them. Center Nathan MacKinnon led the offensive attack with five shots on goal.
Flames cruise to win
Calgary picked up a 4-0 shutout victory in Game 1 against the Avalanche to make the early series statement. Mike Smith stopped all 26 shots sent his way to post the shutout in net. Andrew Mangiapane opened the scoring with 5:35 left in the second period on an unassisted goal. With 1:02 left in the second, Mathew Tkachuk scored on the power play off assists from Mark Giordano and Elias Lindholm to make it 2-0. Mikael Backlund pushed it to 3-0 with 2:59 remaining in the third period on an empty net with assists going to Sam Bennett and Rasmus Andersson. Prediction:
All the trends point toward Calgary and it’s the much better team here. The Flames had their way in Game 1 and I’d expect the same here, especially if the stellar goaltending continues. Go with the Flames here and if the moneyline bet is a bit steep for you, consider the puckline at +125 for Calgary or Colorado at -145 if you feel the visitors will keep this one close.
