Sunday NHL Opening Odds
(The Spread) – There are just three NHL games on the schedule Sunday, but one is a showdown on national television between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the host Washington Capitals. Continue reading for opening lines and totals on all the NHL games for February 6, 2011.
Injuries have plagued the Pittsburgh Penguins (34-15-4) all season long. On Friday night, it only got worse. High-scoring forward Evgeni Malkin tore his ACL and his MCL in the Penguins’ 3-2 victory over Buffalo, putting him out for the foreseeable future.
Pittsburgh will not get any time to lick its latest wounds as it has a 12:30PM EST start Sunday at Washington (28-15-10) that will be aired on NBC. Oddsmakers and online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Capitals -150 favorites in the matchup, while the over-under is listed at 5.5.
According to the latest trends, Washington is 14-37 on over-unders this season while the Penguins are 19-32 on over-unders. The Capitals are led by Alexander Ovechkin, who has 20 goals and 35 assists. Teammate Nicklas Backstrom has 14 goals and 36 assists. For Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby leads the way with 66 points but has missed the last month with a concussion. Kris Letang is next on the team with seven goals and 34 assists.
Pittsburgh has won all three of its games since the All-Star break and five in a row overall, while Washington is 1-1 since the break.
Two other games are on the schedule Sunday, one of which pits the host Montreal Canadiens against the New Jersey Devils at 3:00PM EST. Montreal is -150 favorite and the over-under is 5. St. Louis travels to Tampa Bay for a 3:30PM EST contest. The Lightning are -160 favorite and the over-under is 5.5.
