JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -The Jacksonville Jaguars signed free-agent cornerback Bruce Thornton on Wednesday, filling Ahmad Carroll’s roster spot.
Thornton, a fourth-round pick by Dallas in 2004, was out of the league last season after being waived by the New York Jets in August.
Thornton played one game with the Cowboys in 2004, injured his knee and spent the rest of the season on injured reserve. Dallas waived him the following year. He signed with San Francisco in September 2005 and started 11 of the final 12 games. He finished with 31 tackles and two interceptions.
The Jaguars needed another defensive back heading into minicamp Saturday. All-Pro cornerback Rashean Mathis has a sore quadriceps, second-year player Dee Webb has a shoulder injury and Carroll was waived Monday following his arrest on weapon and drug charges.
Carroll was arrested in Atlanta on Saturday and charged with carrying a weapon without a license, possession of drugs and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was released on a $7,000 bond.
