FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Greg Lewis says he received a warm welcome from Tom Brady in the Patriots’ locker room and hopes to become one of the quarterback’s new targets this fall.
After six years in Philadelphia, Lewis was acquired by New England on March 5 for a draft pick. He expects to compete not only for playing time at receiver behind starters Randy Moss and Wes Welker, but also on special teams, where he fulfilled a number of roles over the years for the Eagles including the “gunner” on punt coverage.
Lewis said on a conference call that Brady – who is rehabbing from knee surgery – came up to him on Monday and welcomed him to the team.
Lewis caught a touchdown pass against the Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2005 and caught a career-high 48 passes the following season. But his playing time diminished the past two seasons, and he caught 19 passes for 247 yards in the 2008 season.
