MIAMI (AP) -New York Giants assistant offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo was hired as offensive line coach of the Miami Dolphins, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press on Thursday. He replaces Mike Maser, who was fired a day earlier.
The person didn’t want to be identified because DeGuglielmo’s contract hadn’t been completed and the Dolphins hadn’t made an announcement.
DeGuglielmo spent the past five years as assistant offensive line coach for the Giants, who won the Super Bowl last season and led the NFL in rushing in 2008. He and Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano worked together from 1991-93 at Boston University. Sparano was offensive coordinator, and DeGuglielmo coached the offensive line.

Miami fired Maser after one season with the team, the first shake-up in Sparano’s staff. Sparano became coach a year ago and led the turnaround from a 1-15 record in 2007 to 11-6 and a playoff berth in 2008.
The offensive line is considered one of the Dolphins’ weakest areas, despite the addition of tackle Jake Long, the first overall pick in the 2007 draft. Miami struggled to run consistently from its base offense this season.
Maser has been an NFL offensive line coach for 14 seasons. He was out of football in 2007, but was the first assistant hired by Sparano last year.
