CHICAGO: It was not a pretty night for the Bears last Sunday at Solider Filed. After knocking out Jay Cutler late in the first half, the Texans went on to beat the Bears 13-6 and cover the spread as a 1-point underdog. It was Chicago’s first loss since a 23-10 defeat in Green Bay on September 13 (Week 2 of the season). The Bears have now failed to cover the spread in three of their last four games as Cutler is doubtful to suit up tonight. Jason Campbell will take Cutler’s place under center after struggling last Sunday versus a stout Houston defense. On the season the Bears are 7-2 overall and 5-4 against the spread, while the over is 5-4 in the team’s first nine games.
SAN FRANCISCO: The 49ers nearly lost to the Rams last Sunday at home as a 13.5-point favorite before rallying for a 24-24 tie. The sister-kisser kept San Francisco from winning its third game in a row and the Niners have now failed to cover the spread in three of their last four games. That said, they’re still a respectable 5-4 against the number this season and are 6-2-1 overall. At 6-4 the Seahawks are now breathing down the Niners necks in the NFC West but San Francisco still owns the best defense in the NFC, if not the entire NFL. Alex Smith was knocked out of the tie with the Rams last Sunday and will not play tonight for the Niners. That means second-year player Colin Kapernick will draw the start after leading the Niners back from a 17-7 deficit last weekend. The under is 5-3 in San Fran’s first nine games. (The Niners-Lions total in Week 2 was a push.)
ODDS: Oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv have installed the 49ers as 5-point favorites versus the Bears, while the over/under total is currently sitting at 35 points. Chicago is 7-2 overall and 3-1 on the road, while San Francisco is 6-2 overall and 3-1 at home.
TRENDS: The favorite is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings between these two teams, while the home squad is 5-1 against the number in the last six meetings between the Bears and 49ers.
