Washington Redskins Fantasy Spin
Coach Bill Callahan said Dwayne Haskins will start Sunday. Case Keenum (concussion) remains in the protocol. A road date with the Bills’ fearsome defense is hardly an ideal situation for Haskins to make his first start. Still, he likely won’t be asked to do all that much; the Redskins have fed Adrian Peterson 25, 20 and 16 combined carries and targets in three games since Callahan took over. Fire up Terry McLaurin with caution against the Bills’ elite secondary, which joins the Steelers as the league’s only defenses that have yet to allow 100 receiving yards in a game to an opposing WR this season.
Buffalo Bills Fantasy Spin
Josh Allen completed just 16-of-34 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the Bills’ 31-13, Week 8 loss to the Eagles. There were serious wind gusts blustering through Buffalo Sunday, limiting each offense’s passing attack. Both quarterbacks relied heavily on yards after catch for big plays. Allen’s first touchdown was a 14-yarder to Cole Beasley, and the second was a 28-yard screen to Devin Singletary. Allen also led the team in rushing with 45 yards on eight attempts but did lose a bad fumble. Allen will be a QB1 next week at home against the lowly Redskins.
Washington
The Redskins have not been profitable for bettors of late, failing to cover the spread in five of their last seven games. One of those successful covers was as a 9.5-point home underdog to the 49ers in a 9-0 loss two weeks ago.
Buffalo
The Bills are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven home games but have covered in five of their last seven games coming off a loss of more than 14 points.
NFL Week 9 Prediction
I’m not going to sell anyone a bill of goods here: Washington is a bad football team and will challenge for the rest of the year for the No. 1 pick in next April’s NFL draft. That said, there’s strong winds expected today in Buffalo, which should negate any big plays in the passing game on either side. After watching his defense get shredded last week and wanting to restore his team’s confidence, it wouldn’t be surprising to see defensive-minded Sean McDermott to lean on his running game and take the game out of quarterback Josh Allen. While I do worry about Washington’s ability to move the ball consistently with Haskins under center, Buffalo can actually be had on the ground. The Bills defense rank just 28th against the run and with Adrian Peterson healthy, perhaps this is one of those turn-back-the-clock moments for the future Hall of Famer. Either way, this is a lot of points in what should be a defensive struggle that features two teams trying to establish the run offensively.
