Chargers vs. Saints Week 5 Odds
NEW ORLEANS, LA (The Spread) – The nightmarish start to the 2012 season for the Saints could continue on Sunday when they host the 3-1 Chargers on Sunday Night Football.
SAN DIEGO: The Chargers improved to 3-1 on the year with their 37-20 victory over the Chiefs in Kansas City last week. It was the third time in four weeks that San Diego covered the spread, with the Bolts’ lone blemish coming in a 27-3 loss to the Falcons in which they were favored by 3 points. Jackie Battle leads the team in rushing (163 yards) and touchdowns (4), while Philip Rivers has passed for 163 yards on the young season. Shaun Phillips has been steady on the defensive side of the ball while totaling three sacks, and corner Antoine Cason has a team-high two interceptions.
NEW ORLEANS: The Saints dropped to 0-4 on the season with their 28-27 loss to the Packers last Sunday in Green Bay. They did cover the 7.5-point spread, however, and are now 1-3 against the number this season. The over also hit in that game, making it the third time in four games that the combined score has sailed over the total in a New Orleans game. The Saints are now four games back of the 4-0 Falcons in the NFC South, as Drew Brees has thrown for 1,350 yards and Jimmy Graham has three total touchdowns. Junior Galette leads the team in sacks with two, while Marques Colston has a team-high 313 receiving yards.
ODDS: Oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv have installed the Saints as 3.5-point home favorites over the Chargers, while the over/under total is currently sitting at 54 points. San Diego is 3-1 overall and 2-0 on the road this year, while New Orleans is 0-4 overall and 0-2 at home.
TRENDS: The Chargers are 6-0 against the spread versus a team with a losing record and a 4-1 ATS in their last five road games, while the Saints are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall and 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 games in Week 5. The over is 4-1 in the Chargers’ last five games versus a team with a losing record and the over is 4-1 in the Saints’ last five home games.
